Mark Twain's Cabin Sonora, California

mark twain house

In those years, the country's cultural life was dictated by an Eastern establishment centered in New York City and Boston — a straight-laced, Victorian, moneyed group that cowed Twain. He honed a distinctive narrative style — friendly, funny, irreverent, often satirical and always eager to deflate the pretentious. Twain knew his way around a newspaper office, so that September, he went to work as a reporter for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. He churned out news stories, editorials and sketches, and along the way adopted the pen name Mark Twain — steamboat slang for 12 feet of water. Twain loved his career — it was exciting, well-paying and high-status, roughly akin to flying a jetliner today.

You can learn a lot about people by the way they treat their animals and employees. One look at the  Carriage House near the Mark Twain House tells you how caring the Clemens family was. The building is very large for an 1874 barn and coachman's apartment. Architects Edward Tuckerman Potter and Alfred H. Thorp designed the outbuilding with styling similar to the main residence. Slate roofing was common during the time the Mark Twain House was being built in the 1870s. For architect Edward Tuckerman Potter, multi-colored hexagonal slate afforded another opportunity to texturize and colorize the house he was designing for Samuel Clemens.

Twain went on a national lecture tour with George Washington Cable - November to February 1885. Twain built a large house preserved today as the Mark Twain House in Hartford CT. His sketch, “The Dandy Frightening the Squatter” was published in the May 1 issue of Carpet-Bag of Boston, Massachusetts. The Clemens family moved into a house known as Mark Twain Boyhood Home. From 1891 until 1900‚ Sam and his family traveled throughout the world. During those years Sam witnessed the increasing exploitation of weaker governments by European powers‚ which he described in his book Following the Equator (1897).

At the age of 30, he had already been first a riverboat pilot and then a miner himself, and having failed at the latter profession he had decided to try his hand at journalism. "Much of the last decade of his life, he lived in hell," wrote Hamlin Hill. He wrote a fair amount but was unable to finish most of his projects. Twain's last 15 years were filled with public honors, including degrees from Oxford and Yale.

Ironically‚ a year after its publication‚ the Clemenses’ elaborate 25-room house on Farmington Avenue‚ which had cost the then-huge sum of $40‚000-$45‚000‚ was completed. After failing as a silver prospector‚ Sam began writing for the Territorial Enterprise‚ a Virginia City‚ Nevada newspaper where he used‚ for the first time‚ his pen name‚ Mark Twain. Seeking change, by 1864 Sam headed for San Francisco where he continued to write for local papers.

If you take a tour, you can see where he sat to write them and the windows from which he gazed. Clemens hired New York architect Edward Tuckerman Potter to design the family residence. Both Samuel and Olivia Clemens were intimately involved in the design process.

He moved to Keokuk, Iowa, to work for Orion’s Daily Post until the fall of 1856. He spent the summer in Muscatine, Iowa, working with Orion at the Muscatine Journal. The Clemens family was forced to move out of the house and in with the Grant family in the Pilaster House.

The leaf motif, bringing "nature" into the architectural detailing, is typical of the Arts and Crafts movement, led by English-born William Morris. The library at the Mark Twain house is typical of Victorian colors and interior design of the day. Taking the pen name Mark Twain, Samuel Clemens wrote his most famous novels in this house, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

A library membership pass is available, in partnership with local libraries, to offer patrons discounted admission to the museum. Purchasing a library membership provides your patrons with access to Mark Twain’s historic home, as well as our Webster Bank Museum Center, featuring two exhibitions and a short film about Twain’s life by acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns. He also wrote short stories, essays and several other books, including a study of Joan of Arc. Some of these later works have enduring merit, and his unfinished work The Chronicle of Young Satan has fervent admirers today.

But it was a senator from Wisconsin, Democrat Gaylord Nelson, who had the idea that would become Earth Day. Nelson had long been concerned about the environment when a massive offshore oil spill sent millions of gallons onto the Southern California coast in 1969. Nelson, after touring the spill site, had the idea of doing a national “teach-in” on the environment, similar to teach-ins being held on some college campuses at the time to oppose the war in Vietnam. Millions of people around the world will pause on Monday, at least for a moment, to mark Earth Day. It’s an annual event founded by people who hoped to stir activism to clean up and preserve a planet that is now home to some 8 billion humans and assorted trillions of other organisms. Swift has visited Central Park numerous times and even performed there twice, in 2010 and 2019.

The Boer War in South Africa and the Boxer Rebellion in China fueled his growing anger toward imperialistic countries and their actions. With the Spanish-American and Philippine wars in 1898‚ Sam’s wrath was redirected toward the American government. When he returned to the United States in 1900‚ his finances restored‚ Sam readily declared himself an anti-imperialist and‚ from 1901 until his death‚ served as the vice president of the Anti-Imperialist League. Huckleberry Finn was also the first book published by Sam’s own publishing company‚ The Charles L. Webster Company. In an attempt to gain control over publication as well as to make substantial profits‚ Sam created the company in 1884. A year later he contracted with Ulysses S. Grant to publish Grant’s memoirs; the two-volume set provided large royalties for Grant’s widow and was a financial success for the publisher as well.

The Mark Twain House & Museum

In Missouri, Twain was born into poverty but learned to read and write during an early newspaper apprenticeship. I headed for Hartford, Connecticut, to see the house while on a two-year road trip as a nomad, traveling in my van, hiking, visiting historic sites, and staying in short-term rentals. I stopped at the homes of many writers including Flannery O’Connor, John Steinbeck, Edgar Allan Poe and others, and this wasn’t to be missed. Aside from being a prolific and beloved author, I admire Twain for his love of travel, innovation and dry observations of humanity. Twain delighted the masses with his first and most famous travel stories, including “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” both of which he wrote while living in Hartford.

Mark made a Midwest lecture tour that included stops in St. Louis, Hannibal, Quincy IL, and Keokuk IA. The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County was published. He took an excursion trip on board the steamer Quaker City to Europe and the Holy Lands (later recalled in his first book The Innocents Abroad). He spent a brief period as secretary to Senator Stewart of Nevada in Washington, DC. They began to focus on human greed and cruelty and questioned the humanity of the human race.

Mark Twain’s publishing firm releases a best-seller, Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant, an autobiography that returned more than $350,000 to the Grant family. Twain took a trip to London, England, then moved to Hartford, Connecticut in October. Twain was sent as a correspondent to the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) for the Sacramento Union. Upon return to California, he gave his first lecture on trip experiences. In April Sam became an apprentice river pilot under Captain Horace Bixby of the Paul Jones.

Mark Twain was ahead of his time — so much so that 140 years ago, he had a man cave. On the third floor of the house where he lived when he wrote “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” Twain drank, smoked and played billiards with his friends. It includes over 200,000 items of art, furniture, memorabilia, manuscripts and visual media to illustrate Stowe’s life. Upon entering the foyer, my first impression was that the house was that it’s dark and busy.

Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in the tiny village of Florida, Missouri, on November 30, 1835, the sixth child of John and Jane Clemens. When he was 4 years old, his family moved to nearby Hannibal, a bustling river town of 1,000 people. During his lifetime, he’d lost a toddler son, two daughters and his wife. In his final years, he sold this house, where he’d spent his happiest years and moved into something smaller elsewhere in Connecticut. Then, in 1910, Halley’s Comet returned after seventy-four years, and Twain departed to meet it again.

The house became a boys’ school and then an apartment building before being rescued in 1929 by the Friends of Hartford, which established the Mark Twain Memorial and Library Commission to restore the house to its original appearance. Twain moved into his last house, Stormfield, in Redding, Connecticut on June 18. Visitors to Stormfield included Helen Keller and Laura Hawkins Frazer (inspiration for Becky Thatcher).

When he moved there, it was where the publishing industry was based. Today, the road out front is busy, but back then, atop the hill it sits on, Twain would have seen a vast expanse of New England Forest and trees. Now, the space between Twain’s home and downtown is filled with homes, businesses and apartments. Mark Twain is often cited as the first “great American novelist,” and Hartford used to be the site of a thriving publishing industry that hosted many writers, including Twain’s neighbor, Harriet Beecher Stowe. There is ample FREE parking for cars and buses in our Farmington Avenue lot and an additional smaller lot off Forest Street. Set your GPS for 385 Farmington Avenue, Hartford to find our main parking lot entrance or to 65 Forest Street for the smaller lot.

The hayloft has been repurposed into offices and the main floor of the barn is a space available for rent for parties and meetings. The long room, with its plant-filled glass conservatory at one end, is overlooked by a vast carved chimneypiece  Here the Clemenses would enjoy a light supper after a trip to New York, or play with the kids, or read quietly. Or, as daughter Susy described, Papa would read his manuscripts aloud and Mama took the opportunity to “expergate” them; or, as daughter Clara described, Papa would make up tales using the bric-a-brac on the mantel. In this special hour-long interactive tour, young visitors explore the everyday lives of the Clemens daughters—the books, games, and songs they loved, the subjects they studied, and the people they interacted with. Led by an experienced guide, this inquiry-based tour invites children to think about the ways that childhood and family life in the Gilded Age were similar and different to their own. Offered daily, our living history tours are an immersive experience that allow you to explore a slice of life in the Clemens household.

The Mark Twain House & Museum is asking campus visitors to be aware of and to adhere to the following guidelines:

The last time Swift wrote a song about the UK city was in her 2019 track "London Boy" from the album "Lover," which is thought to be about Alywn, too. Iconic Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, who died in 1953, and renowned singer-songwriter Patti Smith are among the Chelsea Hotel's famous guests. Built in 1884, the Chelsea Hotel is a bohemian landmark thanks to the numerous famous actors, poets, and writers who have stayed there over the years, from Bob Dylan to Mark Twain. On December 4, 1864, Samuel Langhorne Clemens—better known today as Mark Twain—arrived at this small cabin on Jackass Hill Road near Angels Camp, California, to stay with local miners Jim and Steve Gillis.

Any visit will include a short walk outdoors, between buildings. Paths around these buildings are made of stone and gravel that can be uneven and slippery in some weather. Mark Twain’s historic carriage house is the third building on our property, but is generally not open to the public.

In August bought part interest in Buffalo Express newspaper and started work as its editor. Tours include the restored kitchen wing and butler’s pantry, allowing visitors to experience the rooms as the Clemens' servants did. The modern, LEED certified museum center features orientation and changing exhibition galleries, a Ken Burns documentary and The Nook Café, serving sandwiches, salads and other light fare. It’s quite different for Harriet Beecher Stowe, who didn’t exude fun. Born in 1811 in Connecticut, she was from a family of clergymen so well-known that she kept “Beecher” when she published for the name recognition. She eventually eclipsed them all, becoming a mega-bestselling author.

On the second floor, the master bedroom (decorated with green and yellow floral wallpaper that I’m obsessed with) holds the elaborately carved bed Twain, or rather Samuel Clemens, shared with his wife, Olivia (Livy). They found the angel-heavy headboard, one of the many antiques they picked up while living and traveling in Europe, in Venice, Italy, for $4,700 in 2017 dollars. The pillows are propped at the bottom of the bed, backward, which is how Sam and Livy slept, because, as Twain quipped, he wanted to see what he had paid for.

Given Susy’s sudden death from meningitis in 1896 at the age of 24, and Jean’s death from drowning in 1909 at the age of 29, the Clemens’ time in Hartford came to represent some of their happiest years. The Mark Twain House grounds are open dawn to dusk year-round. House tours and museum admission are available seven days a week April through December, and six days a week (closed on Tuesdays) January through March.See below for a brief description. He is buried in his wife’s family’s plot, at Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, New York.

They had installed a heater and added new flooring but by 1913 wanted a more modern home for their family, which they built nearby on the same plot of land. The Webster house remained unoccupied until 1937 when their daughter and her new husband decided it would be a nice — and, I imagine, free — place to start their life together. The twenty-five-room Gothic Revival, “stick-style” mansion mimicking exposed framing is a National Historic Landmark.

That was why Twain, when he was still an aspiring novelist, built his house adjacent to hers — to rub literary shoulders. From his house, I walked in the rain across a plaza to the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center. Twain’s quick wit and his devotion to live performances on the road — which was how he made money when he lost a fortune in bad investments — make him basically a Victorian star stand-up comic. He understood and nurtured fame, creating a persona that connects with people today, perhaps even more so than his books.

Decorate your Door: Bring Disney Cruise Line Magic Home with Free Printables

disney cruise line doors

The whiteboards allow families traveling together in separate cabins to leave messages for one other. (We used them a lot when we traveled with our kids when they were teens since we let them roam the ship with their friends). These Disney cruise decoration magnets are great because there are over 50 different options for a family and each person can completely customize their own. However, they still look cohesive and leave room for lots of other decorations like a banner or streamers. You can decorate your stateroom door, but there are rules about what’s allowed and what’s not.

One thought on “New Policy on Disney Cruise Line Door Decorations”

Door decorations are a common sight on Royal Caribbean cruises. Royal Caribbean encourages guests to decorate their cabin doors, even selling magnetic decorations on their website. Walking around the cruise ship, you’ll find many passengers who have taken the time to decorate their stateroom doors.

Where to buy personalized magnets for your cruise

Then, peel back just enough of the protective sheet on the magnetic paper and place your first picture. There are a few great designers that have a catalog of design templates available, and will be happy to customize them just for you, FREE of charge (see rules below). Hi Lisa, I'm not 100% positive, but I'm pretty sure the wood doors are in the concierge area. If you have a wood door, I don't think there's anything you can put on it, but I'm not entirely sure. In years past, silver, gold, and platinum Castaway Club members received a small whiteboard as a gift, but I haven’t seen a whiteboard as a gift in a while.

Can you decorate your cruise cabin door on Princess Cruises?

Regardless of cruise line, these rules are basic safety measures to avoid fire hazards and obstruction of the hallways. There are several sellers there that will customize your magnet set with names or dates. Adhere some magnet strips to the back so that they will stick to your stateroom door. Lamination is inexpensive and easy, you can take the door magnets to your local copy shop to have them laminated, or use a home laminator.

The Disney Cruise Line crew is encouraging families to get into the DCL spirit by decorating “stateroom” doors at home. You can even turn it into a good-natured family competition and ask everyone in your household to decorate his or her own bedroom door in a Disney theme. In terms of the pineapple, it might seem like a festive, tropical fruit to brighten up your door for a Caribbean cruise. However, it’s worth mentioning that it has an alternative meaning when placed on a cruise door.

If not, then you will be in for a surprise when walking the hallways. Some stateroom doors are fully covered, while other just have a Disney Vacation Club Welcome Home magnet. All the stateroom doors on the ships are metal except for the concierge rooms on the Dream & Fantasy which have a beautiful wood laminate. The white stateroom doors make a perfect canvas to display your custom door magnets. I’ve cruised a few times without them, because I’d either forgotten to pack them, or I didn’t realize they were an option.

You can stick with the classics, like Mickey and Minnie magnets, or opt for a classic with a twist, like Pirate Mickey Mouse. If you don’t want to DIY a cute set of Disney door magnets, don’t stress! Just make sure you order them with plenty of time for them to arrive before your Disney Cruise Line Vacation. Balloons and other inflatable items are prohibited on cruise ships due to safety and environmental concerns.

How Do I Personalize the Magnets?

If you do damage your door or insist on hanging prohibited materials, you could face a fine from the cruise line for the infraction. If you’re someone who’s not super crafty, I recommend going the letter sticker route. There’s not any technology to fuss with and you don’t need any special craft tools. Also, using this method makes it easy to add letter stickers to your images to personalize your magnets. Over the past 21 years, We have visited over 40 countries, 5 continents and an endless number of cruises and Disney vacations as our family grew and grew and grew.

Don’t feel like you’re stuck with what’s available in big box stores or online. The most popular method is printing on magnetic material which is available at most craft stores or online. There are so many reasons people might choose to add a little personalization on their cabin door during a cruise vacation! Sometimes it’s as simple as quickly identifying which cabin is yours. Elaborate decorations might be used to celebrate a life event or holiday. If you’re going on a Disney cruise, you’ve probably heard of the traditional “Secret Santa” type fish exchange.

You can decorate your cabin door with a fish extender and personalize the pockets so other travelers know who they are gifting to. Attaching a magnetic whiteboard to your stateroom door is a great way to leave messages for other passengers. You can write words of wisdom, inspirational quotes, or fun jokes for fellow cruisers to read and enjoy. Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or a proud graduation moment, cruise door decorations are a fantastic way to celebrate these milestones at sea. It’s not just about making your door look fabulous—it’s about creating memories that stick long after the cruise has docked back home.

Using Photoshop I placed the characters and applied the necessary masking. We also have bumper sticker sized magnets with each of our names featuring some of our favorite Disney characters. First, determine how large of  a magnet you want to have on your door. I try to keep to an 8×10, 5×7, or a 4×6 canvas size, as it makes for easier printing. However, the final graphic and be any size, such as this wine bottle graphic.

Or, for a partial DIY, there are many different Facebook groups with designers offering fun free printable Disney door magnets. But even cruise lines that allow door decs have restrictions, which should be followed closely for safety reasons. For example, Carnival’s policy does not allow the use of materials deemed flammable or not fire retardant.

They are either specific to the cruise, the destination, or your family/group. In recent years, I’ve seen such creative doors that even go beyond just magnets. I’ve seen Haunted Mansion themes, lollipop boards, Christmas lights, and other creative themes. I’d encourage you to get as creative as possible – but just be sure to stay within the rules and don’t do any damage to the doors.

I'm a global nomad at heart, and the dedicated editor behind CruiseGear. I want to share everything I've learned and hope to make your next cruise vacation as enjoyable as possible. See a few great ideas on Pinterest for decorating your cabin door. Sometimes, the doors are covered with a non-metallic finish, so you need stronger magnets.

Attach a small bucket or bag on Halloween so cruisers — or crew — can go “trick or treating”. A cruise vacation is all about having a good time, so spread the cheer beginning with your door. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry. Since the start, it's been our aim to provide the latest cruise news covering all the major cruise lines. In addition to magnets, you’ll also find small whiteboards and fish extenders on doors.

During this period, the Atlantic hurricane season makes it less desirable for most travelers, leading cruise lines to offer significant discounts. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly cruise and are prepared for bad weather and itinerary changes, the off-peak season can be a great time to cruise.

During the back end of the dry season, meaning January until the end of April, average temperatures rise by a few degrees, but the skies usually remain clear. For a November getaway, consider Curaçao and Jamaica, both of which typically receive less than 4 inches of rain, making them ideal destinations. The weather in the Caribbean is still warm during October, reaching average highs in the mid to upper 80s. July is the perfect month for snorkeling as the ocean remains pleasantly warm, with an average temperature of 83°F (28°C).

Tons of music and jazz festivals take place around the Caribbean this time of year, including the Pure Grenada Music Festival in May and the St. Kitts Music Festival in June. If your Caribbean cruise takes place over Easter, Virgin Gorda (part of the British Virgin Islands) holds a weekend filled with parties and calypso music. In Jamaica, parades known as Bacchanal, take to the streets during both months. Here's how the entire year stacks up so you can identify the best time for your travel party to cruise the Caribbean. Go biking around Duval Street in Key West with a stop for a refreshing key lime pie ice cream cone. Watch the sunset from your ship after a day of hanging in a hammock on a Cozumel beach.

Depending on the cruise line you book a trip with, you may be sailing on a big commercial cruise ship or a small private yacht. While both options offer great opportunities for Caribbean cruises, a smaller cruise may be better for you if you’re looking for a more intimate trip. Large cruise ships can feel cramped with the number of people on board. Additionally, smaller ships can sail into smaller ports, allowing you to discover hidden gems in the Caribbean. If it’s not raining, expect the weather to be hot and humid, especially in late summer when the potential for tropical storms increases.

For the super adventurous cruisers who want to swim with sharks, there are plenty of excursions, especially in the Bahamas. While temperatures rise in many places across the U.S. during the height of summer, July and August temperatures in the Caribbean are in the upper 70s and 80s. Beginning at the very end of April and into May, Antigua Sailing Week is globally known for its prestigious sailing races and parties.

The best time to cruise the Western and Southern Caribbean is winter, as the waters are warm, and the temps are comfortable. Spring is a great time to take an Eastern Caribbean cruise as the cooler waters near the Bahamas heat up. To avoid the busy season, the best time to go on a Caribbean cruise is from November to early December.

You'll have options like splash zones for the little ones, monster slides for the adventurers and kids clubs for all ages. There's never a bad time to cruise to this giant blue fishbowl with a bazillion beaches to explore. This may be the perfect season for you if you prefer not only less crowded Caribbean islands, but possibly a less crowded onboard cruise experience as well.

Some islands may experience cooler temperatures but it is rarely ever below 60˚F (15˚C). These balmy conditions offer excellent swimming and snorkeling as well as warm evenings perfect for exploring local cuisine or simply relaxing after a long day at sea. Another factor to consider during this time is that most schools are in session so there will be fewer children onboard resulting in an overall quieter environment.

Plus, winter storms in the U.S. can increase wave action in the Atlantic and in the Gulf of Mexico. The farther north your departure port, the more likely you are to experience a rough ride until your ship sails south into calmer water. A great way to dive deeper into the cultures of the Caribbean islands you visit is by experiencing local holidays and festivals. Festivals happen throughout the year and can be a unique way to experience a port during your cruise.

While it is possible to enjoy a pleasant cruising experience in the Caribbean throughout the year, it is generally understood that cruising during a summer month is the riskiest. The Caribbean Sea is usually relatively calm during late fall and early spring. As you can imagine, this helps ensure all passengers enjoy a smoother, more relaxing cruising experience. April is the perfect month for swimming and water activities in the Caribbean, where the average ocean temperature reaches a warm 27°C (80°F).

We Just Returned from the First Cruise on Icon of the Seas, the Largest Cruise Ship in the World

icons of the sea cruise

The inaugural cruise on Jan. 27 is actually more expensive, but inside and ocean-view cabins are sold out. On Aug. 30, the lowest price for an Icon of the Seas sailing was $2,058 per person, based on double occupancy, for an inside cabin. With 20 decks (18 of them accessible to guests), Icon of the Seas can seem vast and overwhelming.

things I loved (and 4 I hated) about my vacation on the world's biggest cruise ship

The ship also has installed hydrogen-based fuel cell technology using seawater to generate electricity and fresh water. The Baltic Sea trials were successfully completed in the period June 18-22, 2023. The second sea trials are planned for December 2023, for pushing the vessel to its limits before the official delivery to RCI in January 2024. The units are LNG-powered (by liquified natural gas), employ fuel cell technology, and are classified by DNV GL (Hovik Norway-headquartered international ship registrar and classification society).

Family-themed activities

"Family Infinite Balcony" cabins accommodate 6 people and are with split bathrooms, a separate kids' bedroom (with bunk beds), and an infinite balcony. Speaking of vibes, if you're looking for a secluded place to drink (as in, not the swim-up pool bar), few will top the Overlook Pods, perched just behind the AquaDome. The ship's riff on Broadway-approved "Wizard of Oz" — 16-piece live orchestra and flying bed included — delighted me, a hater of most musicals.

More Royal Caribbean

Royal Theater is the main show lounge spreading over 3 floors (forward on decks 3-4-5). The theater presents nightly 2 grand shows - early (at 8 pm) and late (at 10 pm) to match the assigned dining room sittings. Both are full-length production shows with professional performances (singing, dancing, acting, live band music) by the ship's resident entertainment staff. Signature shows are "Hairspray" (musical comedy / original Broadway production themed on humor and commentaries on early 1960's race relations) and "Flight" (themed on the history of flying).

RCI's Icon OTS construction update teaser (released in May 2022) showed a huge white sphere installed midship on top deck. The spherical object weighs 175 tonnes, has diameter 50 ft (15,2 m), height 46 ft (14 m) and consists of 578 aluminum panels. In late-June RCI's President (Michael Bayley) called the big white ball "The Pearl". Metalcolour Group has subsidiaries/production plants in Sweden, Denmark and Singapore.

POOL HOP NONSTOP

Be sure to check out Swim & Tonic, the largest swim-up bar at sea. Admission is free if you want to hang out and wade in the water, though alcoholic beverages will cost you extra unless you purchase a Specialty Beverage Package. The package is a great deal, and it includes beers, wines, and other vacation libations at bars such as the Lemon Post. Now that you know all of the wonderful entertainment, attractions, dining and more that is complimentary on Icon of the Seas, what is not included in your cruise fare? The following restaurants and attractions are open to guests sailing onboard Icon of the Seas, but you'll have to pay an additional fee to access them.

Icon of the Seas will only have two types of ocean-view rooms with a window but no balcony. Its new Panoramic Ocean View rooms are within the AquaDome, offering floor-to-ceiling windows rather than the standard picture window. They will also be larger than the standard balcony cabin at 258 square feet (compared to 160 to 187 square feet). Icon of the Seas will showcase new dining venues and updated spins on guest favorites.

The itinerary is less critical because there is so much to do and see on the ship. But our Icon of the Seas cruise was an Eastern Caribbean itinerary. Given the ship is a destination in itself, we reserved most of our port days to do and see more of Icon of the Seas.

Royal Promenade

Additional attractions include an adults-only pool, an infinity pool and hot tubs sprinkled throughout the area. The pools and hot tubs are positioned along the edges of the ship, so guests can take in the sea views while soaking in the water. Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class ships feature multiple "neighborhoods" — themed areas of the ship with a mix of attractions and dining, drinking and shopping venues. Icon of the Seas takes that concept to the next level with eight neighborhoods, including three returning areas from its sister ships and five that are exclusive to its new class of ships. A cruise vacation is a great opportunity to go outside your comfort zone and try something new with thrilling activities like Category 6.

The 20-deck high ship comes in at 250,800 tons will be more than 6% bigger than Wonder of the Seas and able to hold up to 7,600 passengers. Icon of the Seas will also be 10 feet longer than Wonder of the Seas. On Deck 5, you'll find Sorrento's Pizza, Starbucks, Spotlight Karaoke and the Point & Feather pub. You'll also find The Pearl, the ship's iconic indoor sphere that functions as an artistic stairway, and the outdoor running track encircling it all. The area will be home to Royal Caribbean's first double-pianist bar, Dueling Pianos.

Or, head to Grove Suite Sun Deck, a casual outdoor venue with its own exclusive pool just for suite guests. If you're cruising with your children, there's no shortage of activities and attractions to excite little ones onboard Icon of the Seas℠. There's also the cruise ship's beach-themed carousel, which doubles as a great photo opp.

From expansive balconies that invite the sea breeze to our most over-the-top family accommodations — our range of spacious rooms is designed with family comfort in mind. This is your week to enjoy everything you’ve ever loved about every vacation — all rolled into one. With a kid-approved sprawling aquapark, a pool just for grownups, plus plenty of bites to fuel up for bolder bonding — your whole crew will never want to leave.

All the way forward on Deck 15, this posh space features 220′ views and plenty of comfy furniture including the first-of-their-kind pods at sea. It’s a great place to chill with a book or a drink anytime of day. Inside, the loyal Royal cruisers will find a typical lineup of bars and lounges. The Schooner Bar overlooks the two-story promenade on Deck 6 starboard side. Luckily, Heidi’s favorite lavender daiquiri is still available, along with the new toasted marshmallow old fashioned to go along with the nightly live piano music. Chill Island has 4 Lime and Coconut bars, including the brand-new frozen bar featuring poolside favorites like a Miami Vice.

Of course, we made sure to pop into each venue to try at least one signature cocktail. Thankfully, Royal Caribbean did not change the drink prices on Icon of the Seas. So, most specialty cocktails are covered in the beverage package.

The ship has put special emphasis on catering to young families. However, its myriad attractions will provide entertainment for cruisers of all ages and interests. Icon's go-to neighborhood for adrenaline-pumping activities will be Thrill Island. Found on decks 16 and 17, it's home to all the wild top-deck attractions Royal Caribbean is known for — as well as some new thrills. Additional shopping venues are sketched in on the ship's deck plans, but Royal Caribbean has yet to reveal what stores will set up shop along the park's winding paths. Royal Caribbean offers three tiers of suites, and each subsequent tier comes with increasing Royal Suite-class perks and amenities.

Some predictable games included morning trivia at 10 am in the Schooner Bar. This intense diving and aqua show attempts to replicate an action movie utilizing state-of-the-art pools, lifts, and robots. While Royal Caribbean typically has two comedians, this special sailing featured three, including our favorite, Simeon Kirkiles. However, we went standby later in the cruise and had no issues getting into one of the shows. With his Scottish accent and lineup of typical hits and sing-alongs, this was a rowdy good time most nights. The new open design of the pub incorporates more promenade seating without interfering with the passenger flow in this often busy area.

Similarly, the ship offers a Family Harbor area (not separated by key access) where family cabins are concentrated. This includes a Family Harbor Lounge, which offers a continental breakfast and snacks throughout the day, large-screen TVs for family movies (plus popcorn!) and video game consoles. My then boyfriend (now husband) and I booked Carnival Inspiration, not knowing a thing about cruising but ready for our first vacation together -- to somewhere warm. We were hooked from the beginning and made cruising our vacation of choice long before I started working for Cruise Critic. To keep the beverages flowing without having to worry about the bill, may we suggest our Cheers!

Entertainment

And while Miami isn’t quite known as a pizza town, we don’t think you’ll mind that we’re serving up the cheesy stuff until 4 a.m. (Roll up your sleeves and dig in!) And like any cosmopolitan center, dining quality and variety counts big. That’s why you’ll find Cucina del Capitano and Rudi’s Seagrill restaurants in the neighborhood. Following dinner, the crew will hand out hats, tiaras, banners, streamers and noise makers to guests and there will be a dance party on the ship's deck, featuring a Champagne toast and a countdown to midnight. Canapés and Petit Fours will be available in all bars and lounges after midnight.

Celebrating Holidays

Passengers can also expect live music, DJs and special events across the ships. There's also a Youth Program New Year's celebration for the younger cruisers. The Bonsai Teppanyaki™ experience is set to delight guests aboard Carnival Jubilee™. Rudi’s Seagrill™ is the brainchild of cookbook author and master chef Rudi Sodamin. He has years of experience pleasing palates of vacationers… and this guy loves serving up a smile as much as Carnival does! But he’s serious about seafood, and an evening at Rudi’s proves it through the courses.

CENTER STAGE + PLAYLIST PRODUCTIONS

Otherwise, Carnival has far better itineraries on other ships. New Years only happens once a year, so I think Carnival would be well-served to do what they can to tweak this itinerary. We really enjoyed the Breeze at night but not nearly as much during the day for the reasons noted above. We had a great time overall (how can you not on a cruise?) and will consider Carnival in the future, but we won't be rushing back to Carnival or the Breeze. Being a New Years cruise we paid a rate similar to what we paid for our previous Oasis cruises, and we just didn't feel that we received anything close to a comparable product (even factoring in the New Years premium). As the New Year approaches, Carnival Cruise Line offers a festive gala menu to celebrate the occasion in the main dining room.

This means you can customize your evening to your liking, ensuring that you and your fellow travelers have a memorable experience. Plus, with Carnival's top-notch dining options, you can indulge in delicious meals throughout the night and toast to the new year with a glass of champagne as you watch fireworks light up the ocean sky. Even when you’re looking to the future, you still think about the past. So that’s why — if you were us — you might pay tribute to 50 years of Carnival fun and history by creating a space like The Golden Jubilee™! The décor transports you decades back through time, and this aesthetic is made of actual artifacts from Carnival ships of the past, mixed with design elements inspired by our earliest ships. This may just remind you to think about the fun history you’re creating throughout your vacation.

Funtastic Holiday Cruises

carnival new years cruise

On a special New Year’s Eve cruise with Carnival, you can expect all the great food, drinks, relaxation and recreation you’d get from a regular Carnival cruise. I agree that the times they have you in Port are odd, but I am not sure how scheduling and others ships come into play with it. I equate this the same way as I do setting up Professional Sports schedules. But then i don't like the pool games, or the hairy leg contests, or controlled activities of any kind. But a whole lot of people want to be entertained, no matter how crudely, and i've just found other places to go if i just want to read my book in peace and quiet. Personally i use hot tubs as a destination and not an incidental and i am more inclined to use one that is away from the madding crowd just because i don't want them full of children using them as a mini-pool.

But every moment is a special occasion thanks to onboard spots that are proud to import their flavor from all over. We’re talking restaurants and bars like Latitudes™ with its old-school railway station vibe, The Golden Jubilee™ featuring a unique mix of great drinks and live music, plus Emeril’s Bistro 1397™, which is deliciously all over the map. And don’t miss your chance to sip a little cocktail magic at returning fan-favorite Alchemy Bar®. Go ahead and call Summer Landing 'the greatest chill spot at sea'... What's three letters long and goes great with chilling outdoors?

Shipboard Health and Safety

There will be extended late-night buffet offerings until 4am. MSC Cruises’ kids' club will offer extended hours and free babysitting for parents hoping to stay out for the festivities. On New Year's Day, there will be a special celebratory brunch. Post-New Year’s football bowl games will be shown on the pool deck big screen and indoors as they happen, featuring special food and drink options. And any time you’re in your well-appointed Balcony stateroom aboard Carnival Jubilee™, you’re just steps away from the outdoors by way of your private open-air oasis.

Cloud 9 Spa™ staterooms on Carnival Celebration® feature exclusive décor and in-room amenities to help soothe you after a long day’s fun — spa bathrobes and slippers, plus toiletries by Elemis. Book one of these staterooms and enjoy priority spa reservations, unlimited access to the thermal suites, free fitness classes, exclusive discounts and more! And you can have comfort and value — Carnival Celebration's got a full range of Cloud 9 staterooms in all sizes, from cozy Interiors to stretch-out Suites. Design is more than just the way things look — it's as much about how they work. And staterooms aboard Carnival Celebration® are packed with innovative changes to both.

We make sure cruisers are fully prepared for their cruise vacation with tips on ships and ports.Millions of travelers rely on Cruise Hive in the United States, Europe, Australia, and around the world. Carnival Cruise Lines Christmas and New Year cruises are the best choice for an unforgettable "Fun Ship" Holiday vacation marked by some of the cheapest deals on medium- and big-sized ocean vessels. On our Carnival Jubilee cruise, hosted by Carnival Cruise Line, we’re in a balcony cabin that overlooks the ship’s Havana Experience, an exclusive area that comes with a host of perks. The cruise line first introduced this concept on its Vista Class, and the approach is a smart one for the company that builds its cruises on fun. You’ll also get a bottle of sparkling wine, a selection of juices and delivery of food from the ship’s complimentary restaurants. If you don’t have a few memorable photos from your cruise vacation, did it even really happen!?

Once upon a time you got out of dinner and everyone walked to the theater, now its just full when you get there. Balcony staterooms are proof that while it’s great to be cruisey… on vacation, breeziness is a virtue too. And any time you’re in your well-appointed Balcony stateroom aboard Carnival Celebration®, you’re just steps away from the outdoors by way of your private open-air oasis. Designed for kicking back al fresco, you’re in for some amazing ocean views… views so stunning you’ll just have to feel ‘em to believe ‘em.

As we count down the days until New Year’s Eve, Carnival Cruise Line has announced some exciting new year’s festivities on land and sea for the whole family. New Year's Eve parties will take place throughout all the Royal Caribbean ships, complete with a countdown, balloon drop in the Promenade, Esplanade and Centrum. Adventure Ocean will extend its Late Night Party Zone hours to 2 a.m. In the world of Carnival Jubilee™ zones are where fun, flavor and relaxation live… and there are six just waiting for you to explore. We tried out Rudi’s Seagrill and thoroughly enjoyed our meal there, especially the starters, which included a savory, hearty cioppino and fresh tuna slices.

Beyond the grand party, Carnival Cruises provide a diverse range of entertainment options to suit everyone's preferences. You can catch a Broadway-style show, enjoy comedy performances, or test your luck at the casino. For those seeking relaxation, there are luxurious spas, tranquil pools, and serene sun decks where you can unwind and soak up the sun. Plus, Carnival offers special dining experiences, including gourmet meals and themed dinners to tantalize your taste buds. A New Year's Eve cruise with Carnival offers a wide array of activities to ensure you have an exhilarating and celebratory experience. One of the main highlights is the grand New Year's Eve party held on the ship's deck.

It's the way the ring-lit vanity mirror lights you evenly and shadow-free as you get ready. How the ottoman cushion flips over to serve as an extra table. And even those reading lights, recessed into the wall so you can read in bed without waking anyone! Better comfort, lighting and storage all spring from a deep understanding we've developed around how people actually use their staterooms… and how small changes to the room add up to make the experience that much better. (Enough USB charging ports for everybody’s stuff? Oh yes!) Thoughtful, guest-centric design is how we do it… and all this in-room convenience comes paired with a fresh new look. The crew clears away the deck chairs and everyone stands around and dances to the tunes provided by the DJ.

Even during construction, we knew where we were heading with the big plans for Carnival Jubilee! So here’s your deck-by-deck look at where to find all the fun, and all the staterooms. During the celebration, several LED billboards in Times Square will also display Carnival Cruise Line’s new “No One Does Fun Like Carnival” advertising campaign. While the ball has already been tested to be sure it functions properly, the official lighting for this year’s party will be at 6 p.m.

Join us in the Nightclub and get ready to dance the night away. Your party-pumping DJ will be on-hand all night long with awesome music. There’s even a Youth Program New Year’s Eve celebration for the younger crowd, soyou can dance the night away worry free.
